Panalpina Japan went operational with its ocean freight operations in late 2009. This year, the company was granted the airfreight consolidator license by the Japanese authorities and can now in-source the airfreight export business. The airfreight import operations will be in-sourced in January 2011. By then, Panalpina expects to be fully operational as a customs broker at its Tokyo-Narita branch, followed by the Osaka-Kansai office by mid 2011.
Yusen Air & Sea Service YAS - Panalpina’s partner in Japan - will continue to provide services in Japan as a subcontractor for Panalpina. In addition, Panalpina will represent the interests of YAS in 22 countries across Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Furthermore, both companies keep on providing dedicated services for the respective partner both internationally and within Japan.
“We look back on a very successful partnership with YAS which commenced in February 2007. Both companies could benefit from each other’s strengths and know-how in the Japanese market as well as globally”, comments Andreas Behnke, Country Manager of Panalpina Japan.
“With the in-sourcing of the ocean freight and air freight operations, Panalpina Japan reacts to the growing customer demand for seamless end-to-end logistics services and at the same time demonstrates its commitment to the Japanese market”, he adds.
Since Panalpina’s establishment in Tokyo in 1969, the company has firmly placed itself as one of the leading foreign-based transport and logistics providers to the Japanese market. As traffic to and from Japan and Asia has been steadily increasing, Panalpina has placed a strong focus on the region and has expanded its organization step by step. “We view a strong presence in the Japanese market as an essential part of our global strategy”, says Andreas Behnke. “The cooperation between Panalpina and YAS has proven very important and successful for both companies”. He also emphasizes that “the hand-over of the operations from YAS to Panalpina is proceeding very smoothly. I would like to thank YAS for its tremendous support, underlining the collaborative spirit of both YAS and the NYK Group!”
